CNN recently published an article entitled Study:
\n Threat of Muslim-American terrorism in U.S. exaggerated<\/a>; according
\nto a study released by Duke University and the University of North
\nCarolina at Chapel Hill, \u201cthe terrorist threat posed by radicalized
\nMuslim-Americans has been exaggerated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet, Americans continue to live in mortal fear of radical Islam, a
\nfear propagated and inflamed by right wing Islamophobes.  If one follows
\n the cable news networks, it seems as if all terrorists are Muslims.  It
\n has even become axiomatic in some circles to chant: \u201cNot all Muslims
\nare terrorists, but nearly all terrorists are Muslims.\u201d Muslims and
\ntheir \u201cleftist dhimmi allies\u201d respond feebly, mentioning Waco as the one
\n counter example, unwittingly affirming the belief that \u201cnearly all
\nterrorists are Muslims.\u201d<\/p>\n

But perception is not reality.  The data simply does not support such
\n a hasty conclusion.  On the FBI\u2019s official website, there exists a
\nchronological list of all terrorist attacks committed on U.S. soil from
\nthe year 1980 all the way to 2005.  That list can be accessed here<\/a>
\n (scroll down all the way to the bottom).<\/p>\n

According to this data, there were more Jewish acts of terrorism
\nwithin the United States than Islamic (7% vs 6%).  These radical Jews
\ncommitted acts of terrorism in the name of their religion.  These were
\nnot terrorists who happened to be Jews; rather, they were extremist Jews
\n who committed acts of terrorism based on their religious passions, just
\n like Al-Qaeda and company.<\/p>\n

Yet notice the disparity in media coverage between the two.  It would
\n indeed be very interesting to construct a corresponding pie chart that
\ndepicted the level of media coverage of each group.  The reason that
\nMuslim apologists and their \u201cleftist dhimmi allies\u201d cannot recall
\nanother non-Islamic act of terrorism other than Waco is due to the fact
\nthat the media gives menial (if any) coverage to such events.  If a
\nterrorist attack does not fit the \u201cIslam is the perennial and
\nexistential threat of our times\u201d narrative, it is simply not paid much
\nattention to, which in a circuitous manner reinforces and \u201cproves\u201d the
\npreconceived narrative.  It is to such an extent that the average
\nAmerican cannot remember any Jewish or Latino terrorist; why should he
\nwhen he has never even heard of the Jewish Defense League or the
\nEjercito Popular Boricua Macheteros?  Surely what he does not know does
\nnot exist!<\/p>\n

The Islamophobes claim that Islam is intrinsically a terrorist
\nreligion.  The proof?  Well, just about every terrorist attack is
\nIslamic, they retort.  Unfortunately for them, that\u2019s not quite true. 
\nMore like six percent.  Using their defunct logic, these right wingers
\nought now to conclude that nearly all acts of terrorism are committed by
\n Latinos (or Jews).  Let them dare say it\u2026they couldn\u2019t; it would be
\npolitical and social suicide to say such a thing. Most Americans would
\nshut down such talk as bigoted; yet, similar statements continue to be
\nsaid of Islam, without any repercussions.<\/p>\n

The Islamophobes live in a fantasy world where everyone is supposedly
\n too \u201cpolitically correct\u201d to criticize Islam and Muslims.  Yet, the
\nreality is the exact opposite: you can get away with saying anything
\nagainst the crescent.  Can you imagine the reaction if I said that
\nLatinos should be profiled because after all they are the ones who
\ncommit the most terrorism in the country?  (For the record: I don\u2019t
\nbelieve in such profiling, because I am\u2013unlike the right wing nutters\u2013a
\nbeliever in American ideals.)<\/p>\n

The moral of the story is that Americans ought to calm down when it
\ncomes to Islamic terrorism.  Right wingers always live in mortal fear\u2013or
\n rather, they try to make you <\/strong>feel that way.  In fact, Pamela
\n Geller (the queen <\/em>of internet Islamophobia) literally said her
\n mission was to \u201cscare the bejeezus outta ya.\u201d<\/a> Don\u2019t be fooled, and
\ndon\u2019t be a wuss.  You don\u2019t live in constant fear of radicalized Latinos
\n (unless you\u2019re Lou Dobbs), even though they commit seven times more
\nacts of terrorism than Muslims in America.  Why then are you wetting
\nyourself over Islamic radicals?  In the words of Cenk Uygur: you\u2019re at a
\n ten when you need to be at a four.  Nobody is saying that Islamic
\nterrorism is not a matter of concern, but it\u2019s grossly exaggerated.<\/p>\n
