Israel has deployed thousands of police around Jerusalem’s Old City,
\nfollowing several recent clashes between Jews and Palestinian Muslims
\nat the compound that houses sites holy to both groups.  <\/p>\n

Israeli
\npolice deployed thousands of additional officers at entrances to the
\nOld City leading to the compound containing the Al Aqsa mosque – sacred
\nto Muslims and the Western Wall – Judaism’s holiest site. <\/p>\n

Clashes
\nhave erupted during the past week between Muslims and Jewish
\nworshippers, fueled largely by rumors that Jews were planning to storm
\nthe compound. <\/p>\n

Israel national police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld
\nsays Monday was especially sensitive as 30,000 Jewish worshippers
\napproached the compound – known to Jews as the Temple Mount – at the
\nstart of the week-long Jewish holiday of Sukkot. <\/p>\n

“The Temple
\nMount was open to Muslims that wanted to come and pray only from the
\nage of 50 upwards, and women of all ages,” Rosenfeld explained. “This
\nwas necessary to prevent any disturbances from taking place on the
\nTemple Mount.”<\/p>\n

Among those prevented from approaching the area
\nwas 36-year-old Dmitri Diliani, a member of the Revolutionary Council
\nof the ruling Palestinian Fatah faction of Palestinian President
\nMahmoud Abbas.  <\/p>\n

“This is pure provocation of the Palestinian people since this is one of the holiest Muslim sites,” Diliani said.<\/p>\n

Diliani,
\na Christian, serves as the Fatah spokesman for Jerusalem. He told VOA
\nthat Fatah is encouraging Palestinian Muslims to resist what he views
\nas Jewish efforts to take over the compound. <\/p>\n

“Fatah stands at
\na point where it will continue to organize the process of defending the
\nholy sites through popular effort and grass-roots mobilization,” he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n

Monday saw mobilization by Palestinians against their own
\nleadership, as anger mounts over a decision by the government of
\nPresident Abbas to suspend efforts to bring war crimes charges against
\nIsraeli officials involved in the assault on militants in the Gaza
\nStrip 10 months ago. <\/p>\n

Hundreds of Palestinians protested
\npeacefully in the West Bank town of Ramallah near Jerusalem. The
\nprotesters included Mustafa Barghouthi, a prominent commentator, who
\nsaid the Palestinian leaders’ decision showed little regard for the
\npeople they represent.  <\/p>\n

“They lack the ability to have
\ncollective decision,” Barghouthi said. “There was no consultation and
\nI think they made a grave mistake against the interests of their own
\npeople.” <\/p>\n

Israel says it will maintain heightened security in Jerusalem until the tension around the holy sites subsides.  <\/p>\n

In
\n2000, confrontations at the site of the al-Aqsa mosque and the Western
\nWall sparked a bloody, Palestinian uprising known as the Second
\nIntifada, which lasted for several years.  <\/p>\n
