The controversial BitTorrent site posted an <a href=\"http:\/\/thepiratebay.se\/blog\/210\">odd announcement<\/a> last night stating that it had decided to \u201cbuild something extraordinary\u201d with its server infrastructure.  \t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to experiment with sending out some small drones that  will float some kilometers up in the air,\u201d wrote \u201cMrSpock\u201d on the Pirate Bay blog. \u201cThis way our machines will have to be shot down with  aeroplanes in order to shut down the system. We\u2019re just starting, so we  haven\u2019t figured everything out yet. But we can\u2019t limit ourselves to  hosting things just on land anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"sm-content-ad\">\n<div id=\"beacon_a6ac2d0815\" style=\"position:absolute;left:0;top:0;visibility:hidden;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/openx.datacenterknowledge.com\/live\/www\/delivery\/lg.php?bannerid=11271&amp;campaignid=3254&amp;zoneid=6&amp;loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.datacenterknowledge.com%2Farchives%2F2012%2F03%2F19%2Flow-orbit-servers-or-a-pirate-prank%2F&amp;referer=http%3A%2F%2Fyro.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F12%2F03%2F19%2F1433216%2Fthe-pirate-bay-plans-servers-in-the-sky&amp;cb=a6ac2d0815\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:0;height:0;\" width=\"0\" height=\"0\" \/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The so-called Low Orbit Server Stations (LOSS) prompted discussion at <a href=\"http:\/\/news.ycombinator.com\/item?id=3721198\">Hacker News<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/torrentfreak.com\/the-pirate-bays-attacks-censorship-with-server-drones-120318\/\">TorrentFreak<\/a>, where some commenters debated the technical challenges to aerial  hosting, and others were deeply skeptical. The Pirate Bay said it was  experimenting with using GPS to control servers using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\">Raspberry Pi<\/a>, a credit-card sized Linux computer.<\/p>\n<p>BitTorrent news site <a href=\"http:\/\/torrentfreak.com\/the-pirate-bays-attacks-censorship-with-server-drones-120318\/\">TorrentFreak<\/a>, which covers the Pirate Bay on a regular basis, appears to be taking  the announcement seriously. \u201cAlthough the line between reality and  fantasy can be rather thin at The Pirate Bay, we were assured that the  plan to launch a drone is real,\u201d wrote Ernesto, who said the first drone would be launched over international waters.<\/p>\n<p>The Pirate Bay has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/archives\/2009\/10\/07\/pirate-bay-hunkers-in-a-bunker\/\">relocated its servers<\/a> on numerous occasions seeking a haven from authorities and entertainment companies. At one point it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/archives\/2007\/01\/12\/the-pirate-bay-wants-to-buy-sealand\/\">considered buying<\/a> the \u201cmicronation\u201d of SeaLand or another data haven.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Did April Fools\u2019 Day come early for The Pirate Bay?
