Amidst National Islamophobic Upheaval, Arizonans Protest Mosque That\u2019s Actually A Church <\/a><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a>In an era saturated<\/a> with<\/a> absurd<\/a> moments<\/a> of anti-Muslim<\/a> fear-mongering<\/a>, mosques have become a touchstone<\/a> for Islamophobia. Even unbuilt mosques have set off a wave of anti-Muslim sentiment in Tennessee<\/a>, Texas<\/a>, California<\/a>, and most notably, New York<\/a>. Not to be outdone, the people of Pheonix, AZ were quick to call foul over the appearance of a dome-like structure along an interstate. But in the clamor over the impending Muslim takeover, these Arizonans missed one small detail \u2014 the building is not a Mosque, it\u2019s a church<\/a>: <\/p>\n

A new dome-like structure near 19th Avenue along Interstate 10 in Phoenix is the Light of the World church, a nondenominational Christian church hoping to modernize traditional worship services, a church spokesman said<\/p>\n

Since the distinctive dome shape went up, church leaders said they have received phone calls from concerned neighbors who\u2019ve mistaken the building for an Islamic mosque<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, church officials hung a sign reminding people they\u2019re Christian congregation. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to let people know that we\u2019re Christian and our churches are modern,\u201d said Uzieo Martinez.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
